What are Sacraments?
In our sacramental life we celebrate God's great love for us and experience Christ's saving presence in our lives. We celebrate the sacraments with signs and symbols and usually with proclamation of the Word and in the midst of the community. It is important for people to be in touch with the meanings of the signs and symbols and the significance of God's words and God's people in their lives if the rituals are to be as meaningful as possible for them. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a process through which adults who are not Catholic, or were baptized in the Catholic Church but have not received the Eucharist or been Confirmed, have the opportunity to learn more about the teaching of Jesus Christ, study Scripture, and discuss Church teaching. Rituals are celebrated on occasions throughout their journey, which may take as long as two years. Those, who after a period of formation, make an initial commitment are sent forth from Mass at the completion of the Liturgy of the Word to further break open the Readings. Ordinarily the Catechumens who seek Baptism, and the Candidates who have been baptized in another Christian tradition, are received into the Church at the Easter Vigil. School-age children who wish to be baptized or to become Catholic after being baptized elsewhere, enter into the RCIA process as well. Returning Catholics
St. Thomas More Parish welcomes those who have been away or inactive and wish to reconnect with the Catholic Church. The Returning Catholic process provides weekly meetings with topics that help participants understand the changes in the church and also helps them to reintegrate into the parish community. Contact Luciann MacDonald at the Parish Office, 425-743-2929 ext. 21 or luciannm@stmp.org, for more information.
Tribunal Advocacy for Annulments
The Parish offers assistance to those adults who have experienced an unsuccessful marriage and are seeking to petition the Tribunal of the Archdiocese for a possible annulment. St. Thomas More Parish has professionally trained and appointed advocates to extend this ministry to any inquiring individual. These are the values on which we build the Faith Formation Program:
• Parents are the first and most important teachers of their children in nurturing and practicing our Catholic faith.
• The parish role is to help parents with this teaching role.
• Worshiping together as a family is a critical part of a child’s faith formation
Faith Formation Sunday School
Faith Formation Classes start on Sundays, in September and run through May with the exception of holiday weekends. Classes are held during both 9:30 and 11:30 Masses.
Children’s Liturgy of the Word
Children’s Liturgy of the Word is offered for 2nd through 5th graders year round during the 9:30 and 11:30 Masses. This gives the children the opportunity to both hear the Word of God in ways they can understand and interact with and join their families for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The children leave Mass in a group after the Opening Prayer and return to join their families as the collection is being taken up. This program will be strengthened with monthly gatherings on Sunday evenings for the families to further explore Catholic Tradition—Mary, Saints, the Liturgical Year and more.
Sacramental Preparation Classes
Our Sacramental Preparation Program begins with a parent meeting, followed by the family working together with materials we give them to help the child understand and want to follow Jesus. There is a day retreat for the parents and children, a rehearsal, and the celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Later in the year the whole process begins again to prepare for celebrating the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Watch the bulletins for these dates. Children should be 2nd grade or older.
